It’s a sign of affection to nickname someone you know or even love. Often times people may not even know the real name of someone because they have always been known by their nickname.
We were just having this conversation the other day when we saw a glimpse of Tiger Woods on a big screen. His real name is Eldrick Tont Woods.
So what is it called when you name an inanimate object? This phenomenon is called Anthropomorphism: Webster dictionary defines it as attributing human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities.
Before these terms were established, it was said that those individuals who practiced naming inanimate objects were going a little cuckoo. Sadly, back in the day, I would have been taken away and labeled “cuckoo,” because Elizabeth and I have named all our plants, trees, and herbs. I even nicknamed our grill “Flame Thrower” after the bad night with the burnt brats.
I am happy to announce after much research the findings show that individuals who partake in this form of endearing entertainment of naming plants, trees, herbs, grills, cars, etc., are said to have a great imagination and social cognition. Social cognition can be replaced with emotional intelligence.
Honestly, it has helped me and Elizabeth to feel more at home with our new surroundings. We have even named some of the Morning Doves who pay us a visit (Madge & Flo); the black Crow – that does not stay out of the pool is Mr. Edelweiss; and our Hummingbirds who bomb at our heads are Honey B and Bomber Bob.
So without further ado, let me introduce you to our Motley Crew (hey that rhymes;-)
It’s been hard for the boys to keep the names straight. One day I asked Mate if he had checked on Peter lately because I wanted to make sure he was getting enough water. Mate said in a frustrated tone, “Who is Peter? I can’t even get the kids’ names straight without first calling them by each of the dog’s names.” We died laughing. We’ve both done it. Please don’t judge us. We’re aging and our split second memory recall is questionable at times.
Don’t forget to tell me some of your nicknames and also whether or not you fall into the anthropomorphism category. It’s a good thing! It’s a term of endearment.
I can’t wait to hear!!
